Reverse osmosis drinking water systems in Southwest Florida

Short answer: reverse osmosis (RO) is an under-sink system that reduces dissolved salts and minerals in the water you drink and cook with. Whether you need one depends on your source. Brackish-well homes and homes with high-TDS water are common candidates, while many SWFL city supplies are already RO-treated at the plant. We test first, then recommend RO, Aqua Nest, or nothing.

How reverse osmosis works

Water passes through a sediment and carbon pre-filter, then a semi-permeable membrane, then a polishing filter. The membrane holds back most dissolved solids; that concentrate is rinsed to the drain. Treated water is stored in a small tank, or delivered on demand in tankless designs, and comes out at a kitchen faucet.

When RO makes sense in SWFL

When it may not be needed

Cape Coral and Fort Myers both treat brackish Floridan aquifer water with reverse osmosis at the plant, according to the City of Cape Coral and the City of Fort Myers. Island Water Association on Sanibel does the same (IWA). On those supplies, taste and odor at the tap are often what people want addressed, and an under-sink carbon system such as Aqua Nest may be the simpler fit.

What we do

Frequently asked questions

What does a reverse osmosis system do?

An under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane that separates water from most dissolved salts and minerals (total dissolved solids, or TDS). It typically feeds a dedicated drinking-water faucet or your existing kitchen faucet, not the whole house.

Do I need RO if my city water is already treated with reverse osmosis?

Not necessarily. Several SWFL utilities, including Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and Island Water Association on Sanibel, already use reverse osmosis at the plant. Homeowners there usually ask about taste, odor, or the chlorine or chloramine used for disinfection, which a carbon stage can address. We test first and tell you if RO is not needed.

Does an RO system waste water?

RO sends part of the water to the drain to carry away what the membrane rejects. The ratio depends on the system and on your water pressure and temperature; the manufacturer's specification lists it. We size and set up the system for your home's pressure.

How often do RO filters and membranes need to be changed?

Pre- and post-filters are typically changed about once a year and membranes every few years, but the schedule depends on the model and your water. We give you the manufacturer's schedule for the system we install.

Is reverse osmosis the same as Aqua Nest?

Aqua Nest is our under-sink drinking-water system. At a free consultation we explain the differences between Aqua Nest and a reverse osmosis setup and which one fits your water test results and kitchen.

How much does RO installation cost?

It depends on the system and the plumbing at your sink, so we quote after a free water test and consultation. There is no charge for the test or the consult.
