Well water treatment in Southwest Florida

Short answer: SWFL well owners most often call about rotten-egg odor (hydrogen sulfide), orange staining (iron), and hard-water scale. The fix depends on a test, and usually on doing things in the right order: iron and sulfur first, then hardness, then drinking water at the sink. We start with a free in-home water test and a free consultation.

Common well water problems we see

Iron, odor, and color fall under the EPA secondary drinking water standards, which are aesthetic guidelines rather than federally enforceable limits.

Testing comes first

About 12% of Floridians use private wells or limited-use systems, according to the Florida Department of Health. DOH recommends that well owners test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year through a county health department or state-certified lab. Our free in-home test is a field check for the conditions we treat. It complements that lab testing and does not replace it.

Treatment options, in order

  1. Iron and sulfur filtration at the point of entry.
  2. A water softener for hardness, if the test calls for it.
  3. Whole-home treatment when several issues need one system.
  4. Drinking water at the sink: Aqua Nest or reverse osmosis.

Where we work on wells

We serve well owners across Lee, Collier, and Charlotte counties, including Lehigh Acres, Golden Gate, North Fort Myers, Port Charlotte, and Punta Gorda.

Frequently asked questions

Who tests and regulates my private well?

Private wells are not covered by utility water quality reports. The Florida Department of Health recommends that private well owners test for bacteria and nitrate at least once a year through a county health department or a state-certified lab.

Is your free water test a lab test?

No. Our in-home test is a field check for the conditions we treat, such as hardness, pH, and iron, plus help tracking down odors. It does not replace certified lab testing for bacteria and nitrate.

Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?

That smell is usually hydrogen sulfide gas. The Florida Department of Health suggests checking whether it appears on hot water only, softened water only, or on both hot and cold, to narrow down the source.

What order should well water treatment go in?

It depends on the test. In general, iron and sulfur are handled before a softener, because iron can foul a softener. Drinking-water treatment such as reverse osmosis or Aqua Nest goes last, at the kitchen sink.
